We’re upgrading Greensborough Road in Greensborough and Watsonia to create safer walking and cycling connections for the community.

Major works are underway from Grimshaw Street to Nepean Street, delivering new shared zones, upgraded walking and cycling routes and new landscaping, while maintaining two-way traffic between Nell and Grimshaw streets.

The shared zones will run between Nell and Temby streets, and between Nepean and Elder streets, forming a continuous route along the eastern side of the Greensborough Highway that connects to the wider pedestrian and cycling network.

New landscaping including street tree planting, garden beds, shrubs, ground covers and vertical greening will be introduced along the corridor and adjoining streets to provide more shade, improve amenity and create greener local neighbourhoods.

Sections of road and shared paths will progressively open as works are completed.

Construction will be completed in stages in 2026 with finishing works and planting completed in 2027.

How we're upgrading Greensborough Road

The upgrade will be delivered in stages to minimise disruption and maintain local access where possible.

Stage 1: Getting ready

Site compounds, fencing, traffic management and underground service checks have been set up on local streets to prepare for the final stage of works.

Works are being carried out street by street to reduce disruption and maintain property access.

We are working closely with residents and provide advance notice of any temporary changes to access or parking.

Stage 2: Build the new shared zones

Sections of Greensborough Road between Nell and Temby streets and between Nepean and Elder streets will be upgraded into shared zones.

A new shared-use path connection between Grimshaw and Nell streets and Temby and Nepean streets will help create a continuous walking and cycling route through the area.

Greensborough Road between Grimshaw and Nell streets will remain two-way, with sections progressively reopening to traffic as works are completed.

Stage 3: Connecting the walking and cycling network

We’ll connect the new shared zone to the surrounding walking and cycling network, including the shared use path between Temby and Nepean streets and links to the Nell Street walking and cycling bridge.

Together these create a continuous route between local streets, schools, shops, and connect to the wider M80 Trail network, using low-traffic local streets and shared paths.

Stage 4: Landscaping and greening

From spring 2026, landscaping will begin across the project area, with planting to take place in mid 2027.

Additional trees, planting and streetscape improvements will create greener, more attractive streets and provide shade and soften surrounding infrastructure.

Why we’re installing shared zones

Once completed, the shared zones will create safer, calmer streets that prioritise walking and cycling, with greener, friendlier local streets for residents.

Key improvements include:

• improved pedestrian and cycling access
• new parking bays
• new pram crossings
• upgraded pavement treatments
• new landscaping and plating
• durable, long-lasting infrastructure that links into the wider walking and cycling network.

Why temporary closures are needed

Temporary road closures and changed traffic conditions are required to safely deliver these upgrades.

Changes to travel and access

During works there will be temporary changes to parking, vehicle access, pedestrian and cycling routes, and local traffic conditions.
