18 August 2025
We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.
What we're doing
To build the new Doncaster Road interchange, we're building a temporary Doncaster Road citybound exit ramp to enable access to build the Ringwood side of the new Doncaster Road bridge. To support these works, we'll close the Koonung Creek trail from Clifton Street to Doncaster Road, with a diversion in place for pedestrians and cyclists via Winfield Road.
From August until early 2026, we'll work to:
- extend and realign barriers on the citybound Doncaster Road exit ramp
- remove trees and vegetation along the existing citybound Doncaster Road exit ramp
- install pavement markings and detour signage on Winfield Road for pedestrian and cyclists
- locate underground services
- remove a small section of noise wall near Winfield Reserve
- remove existing light poles and replace with temporary lighting
- construct the new temporary citybound exit ramp
- install permanent drainage in the work area.
Once the temporary ramp is built, we will aim to switch traffic it in early 2026.
When are we working
- Day works - 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturdays
- Night works - 7pm to 6am from Monday to Friday
To safely build the temporary ramp and keep traffic moving during the day, some activities will be completed at night. We'll speak to residents about planned night works ahead of time.
What to expect
- Extending the closure of the Koonung Creek Trail from Winfield Road to Doncaster Road and diverting pedestrians and cyclists via Winfield Road.
- Temporary removal of on-street parking on the western side of Winfield Road between Doncaster Road and Abbott Street
- Speed limit reduction on Winfield Road to 40 km/h
- Overnight ramp and lane closures at times, while we build the temporary citybound exit ramp.
- Visual changes from tree and vegetation removal
- Construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area
- On-road diversions for pedestrians and cyclists due to the shared path closure
- Speed reductions in local streets
- Medium to high levels of noise, dust and vibration from machinery and equipment.
To stay safe, please follow all instructions from signage and traffic controllers. We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout these works.
