23 June 2025
We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.
What we're doing
From June 2025, we'll establish a new worksite in Musca Reserve between Burke and Bulleen roads to upgrade the noise walls in Musca Reserve and along Orion Street. We'll install the first panels of noise walls later this year.
Works include:
- Removing trees and vegetation within the work area.
- Removing the guard rails on the freeway.
- Removing existing lighting and installing temporary lighting along the freeway.
- Installing temporary fencing to delineate our worksite.
- Removing the existing noise wall in stages.
- Earthworks to level out the worksite.
- Building concrete foundations for the new noise wall using a technique known as 'bored piling.'
- Installing new noise wall panels.
Where and when
Day works: 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturdays
Due to safety and traffic impacts, some activities may be required at night. We'll speak to residents about planned night works ahead of time.
What to expect
During these works, you'll also notice:
- Visual changes from tree and noise wall removal.
- Medium to high levels of noise, dust and vibration from machinery and equipment.
- Access to the pedestrian underpass at Musca Reserve near Burke Road will be maintained, with traffic management at times.
- Construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area.
- Site access and deliveries via the freeway.
Managing impacts
We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements, including:
- Having qualified ecologists onsite during tree removal and managing impacts.
- Accessing via the freeway where possible to reduce construction vehicle movement on local roads.
- Monitoring noise, dust and vibrations levels with real time monitoring technology.
- Minimising light spill with targeted directional lighting when working at night.
- Preventing dust and water runoff using street sweepers and water carts.
