30 January 2026

We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.

What we're doing

From 9pm, Wednesday 4 February to mid-March, we'll close the Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp for up to six weeks to complete 24/7 works to build foundations for a new shared path underpass at the Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp, new noise walls and carrying out pavement works. Once this work is complete, we’ll realign the Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp further north to create space to continue construction of the major new interchange at Bulleen.

From 10pm, Friday 6 February to 5am, Monday 9 February, we’ll also close the citybound lanes on the Eastern Freeway between Doncaster and Bulleen roads, as well as some freeway ramps. During this closure we’ll asphalt new freeway lanes, safely move traffic onto reconfigured lanes and open a new worksite in the centre median of the freeway.

Delays of up to 60 minutes are expected during peak travel times. We encourage motorists to plan ahead during these closures, seek alternative routes and allow extra time.

24/7 works

During these closures we’ll:

  • start major construction of the future shared path underpass at the Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp by building foundations and carrying out concreting works
  • build noise and retaining walls near Mountain View Road which includes bored piling works
  • remove some trees and trim vegetation
  • excavate and place material for temporary machinery platforms
  • install drainage and complete watermain works
  • remove existing road asphalt
  • lay asphalt, realign safety barriers, apply line marking and construct new kerbs along the Eastern Freeway and Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp
  • realign the Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp and citybound lanes between Doncaster and Bulleen roads.

Managing impacts

During these works we’ll manage impacts by:

  • Monitoring noise, dust and vibration levels during works, when required
  • Directing lighting away from residential properties
  • Completing noisier works earlier in the night, where possible
  • Signage, traffic controllers and detours in place to guide motorists around the area during the closure

Keeping in touch

We’ll be out talking to nearby residents and businesses about these works in more detail, including how we’ll be managing any local impacts.
