21 November 2025
We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.
As part of work to build a major new interchange at Bulleen Road, we’re widening the existing Bulleen Road bridge from seven lanes to ten lanes, with a separated pedestrian bridge for safe, easier crossings.
What we're doing
To support the widening of the Bulleen Road bridge, we’ll need to close the Eastern Freeway Ringwood-bound lanes overnight, between the Bulleen Road Ringwood-bound exit ramp and the Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp. We’ll remove sections of the eastern footpath and steel barriers (Ringwood side) on Bulleen Road bridge.
Where and when
- Night works: 9pm to 9am on Saturday
From 9pm Saturday 29 November to 9am Sunday 30 November, the Eastern Freeway will be closed Ringwoodbound between the Bulleen Road Ringwood-bound exit ramp and the Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp. We’ll also need to close the Chandler Highway Ringwood-bound entry ramp during this period. Detours will be in place.
What to expect
During these works you'll notice:
- overnight lane closures on Bulleen Road bridge and the Eastern Freeway, as well as an entry ramp closure at Chandler Highway
- longer travel times due to detours in place, approximately 15 minutes
- traffic controllers and signage to guide motorists around our works
- construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area
- low to medium levels of noise from machinery and equipment associated with setting up a crane, concrete wire saw cutting and lifting the concrete segments out
- use of directional lighting.
Managing impacts
We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict Environmental Performance Requirements including:
- scheduling noisier works early in the evening, where possible
- monitoring noise levels with real time monitoring, when required
- minimising light spill with targeted lighting
- working behind barriers to keep our workers and road users safe
