15 May 2025
We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.
What we're doing
As part of a major new interchange at Bulleen Road, we’re building new bridges and ramps that will connect an upgraded Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels.
To build the foundations of the structures, we’re carrying out sheet piling by vibrating metal sheets into the ground. At times, we’ll also use driven piling by hammering concrete elements into the ground. We’ll build a retaining wall next to the Bulleen Road Bridge by drilling long steel pieces into an excavation.
As we're working near roads, we'll need to work at night to safely carry out these works throughout May until July 2025. There will be nightly speed reductions and lane closures on Thompsons Road and the Eastern Freeway. These works are expected to generate medium to high levels of noise.
When we'll work
From Thursday 15 May until early July 2025, between 7pm and 6am, Monday to Friday
What to expect
- Cranes lifting metal sheets and vibrating them into the ground with an excavator
- Installing concrete elements into the ground with an excavator using a hammer attachment
- Drilling long pieces of steel into an excavation and using concrete to build the wall
- Reduced speed limits and overnight lane closures on Thompsons Road and the Eastern Freeway
- High levels of noise, vibration, light towers and dust from machinery and equipment.
Managing impacts
We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements, including:
- Only installing the first 3 metres of each sheet pile at night and completing the rest during the day
- Monitoring noise, dust and vibrations levels with real time monitoring technology
- Minimising light spill with targeted directional lighting away from residences.
We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout these works. The project’s environment team will actively monitor and manage these construction impacts to ensure best practice is applied throughout construction.
Keeping in touch
We’ll be out talking to nearby residents and businesses about these works in more detail, including how we’ll be managing any local impacts. If you have any questions now, please contact the 24/7 Contact Centre on 1800 105 105.
Schedule is subject to change. Visit the Disruptions map for schedule changes. For more information call 1800 105 105 or visit the Project Information Centre at 284 Doncaster Road, Balwyn North.
