We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.

We’re building a major new interchange at Bulleen Road, seamlessly connecting an upgraded Eastern Freeway to the new North East Link tunnels. As part of this work, we’re widening the existing Bulleen Road bridge over the Eastern Freeway from six lanes to ten lanes. We’re also building a new separated walking and cycling bridge, making it safer and easier to move through the area.

What we're doing

To support the widening of the Bulleen Road bridge, we’ll need to close the bridge overnight in both directions. We’ll install scaffolding, carry out traffic signal work and start strengthening the existing Bulleen Road bridge. Please see map overleaf for further information.

Where and when

Night works: Bulleen Road bridge above the Eastern Freeway closed:

  • Tuesday 4 August to Thursday 6 August, 9:30pm to 5am each night
  • 9.30pm, Friday 7 August to 7am, Saturday 8 August

Detours in place, and additional travel time of up to 15 minutes expected There will be further overnight closures of the Bulleen Road bridge above the Eastern freeway, at times in August. We’ll let you know further details ahead of time when night works will occur.

What to expect

During these works you'll notice:

  • overnight closure of the existing Bulleen Road bridge in both directions
  • longer travel times due to detours in place, approximately 12 minutes
  • traffic controllers and signage to guide motorists and pedestrians around our works
  • no pedestrian access across the Bulleen Road bridge over the Eastern Freeway while the closure is in place
  • pedestrians and cyclists needing to cross the Bulleen Road bridge during these overnight closures, as well as people who may require assistance can access a taxi shuttle service via the traffic controllers working at either side of the bridge
  • construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area
  • low levels of noise from machinery and equipment associated with setting up scaffolding, grouting and bearing replacement
  • changes to the bus routes 200 and 905 while the closure is in place
  • use of directional lighting.

Managing impacts

We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict Environmental Performance Requirements including:

  • scheduling noisier works early in the evening, where possible
  • monitoring noise levels with real time monitoring, when required
  • minimising light spill with targeted lighting
  • working behind barriers to keep our workers and road users safe.
