3 August 2026

We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.

What we're doing

From 10pm, Friday 14 August to mid September, we’ll close Thompsons Road in both directions between Bulleen Road and the Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp and work 24/7 to build the permanent Thompsons Road alignment, as well as continue to construct the elevated ramps connecting an upgraded Eastern Freeway into the North East Link Tunnels.

During this time from 9pm, Tuesday 18 August to mid September, we’ll also close the Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp to lift large beams into place and carry out works to continue building the permanent ramp.

Longer travel times of approximately 30 minutes during peak periods can be expected and detours will be in place with on-road signage in place to assist drivers.

24/7 works will include:

  • installing large beams, concrete panels, traffic barriers and noise wall post and panels
  • removing old services and infrastructure including light poles
  • undertaking concreting and steel fixing works including large concrete pours
  • installing new drainage, light pole and traffic signal services
  • placing, compacting and removing earth material with excavators and vibratory rollers
  • removing existing road surfaces (profiling), removal of ground coverage vegetation, rock breaking and placing new asphalt, kerb and line marking
  • building foundations for permanent traffic barriers using bored piling methodology
  • constructing crane platforms.

What to expect

During these works:

  • from 7pm, Sunday 16 August to 7am, Wednesday 2 September access to Sandra Street and the Thompsons Road Service Road will be via Barak Street. Vehicles exiting Sandra Street will be permitted to turn left on to Thompsons Road only during this time
  • from 7pm, Sunday 16 August to 7am, Wednesday 2 September access to the Manningham Hotel and Club and Dan Murphy’s will be via the Marcellin Access Road from Bulleen Road (please see map overleaf). Outside of this time, access to Manningham Hotel and Club will be via a one-way traffic arrangement with entry via Thompsons Road and exit via the Marcellin Access Road
  • rock breaking activities where required will be carried out until 10pm during night shift
  • at times throughout this period, overnight closures of the Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp will be required
  • there will be changes to bus routes 905, 280, 200, 305 and 309 during this closure. Please see signage at bus stops or visit Transport Victoria website to plan your journey
  • moderate to high levels of noise can be expected, as well as the use of truck horns and beeping during asphalting works
  • longer travel times of approximately 30 minutes can be expected due to detours in place
  • traffic controllers and signage will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians around our works
  • there will be an increase in construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area.

Managing impacts

We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict Environmental Performance Requirements including:

  • scheduling noisier works early in the evening, where possible
  • monitoring noise levels with real time monitoring, when required
  • minimising light spill with targeted lighting
  • working behind barriers to keep our workers and road users safe
  • use of directional lighting.

Schedule is subject to change. Visit Disruptions for schedule changes.
