Upcoming disruptions

From 10pm, Friday 14 August to 5am, Monday 17 August
Eastern Freeway closed in both directions between Bulleen and Springvale roads.

From 10pm, Friday 14 August to mid-September
Thompsons Road closed between Bulleen Road and Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp to the Eastern Freeway.

From 9pm, Tuesday 18 August to mid-September
Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp to the Eastern Freeway closed.

Eastern Freeway closure

We’ll close the Eastern Freeway in both directions between Bulleen Road and Springvale Road, to lift and install a large structure that forms part of the citybound exit ramp from the new North East Link tunnels to the Eastern Freeway.

This ramp is the longest and tallest ramp across the entire North East Link project and a significant milestone for the project. The structure being lifted is 75 metres long, weighs 572 tonnes and is made up of nine large beams.

We’ll also continue building new noise walls, installing new on-road technology and carry out pavement works during this weekend closure.

Additional freeway closures will take place throughout 2026, and we’ll notify you ahead of time.

Delays of up to 90 minutes are expected during peak travel times.

We encourage motorists to plan ahead during this closure, allow extra time and avoid the area if possible. If you are travelling to the city or airport, consider using alternative arterials including the Monash Freeway or the M80.

Thompsons Road and Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp closures

We’ll close Thompsons Road to build the permanent road alignment, complete tie in works to the newly widened Bulleen Road bridge and continue to build the elevated ramps connecting an upgraded Eastern Freeway into the new North East Link Tunnels.

We’ll also close the Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp after the weekend freeway closure is completed. Works include delivering and installing large beams to construct elevated ramps.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected during peak travel times.

Keeping you moving

During these closures we'll implement a range of measures to manage traffic flow and ease congestion on the detour routes, including:

closing some freeway ramps and banning some right-hand turns
installing no stopping signs on major roads
monitoring and adjusting traffic signals where needed.

Managing impacts

During these works we’ll manage impacts by:

monitoring noise, dust and vibration levels during works, when required
directing lighting away from residential properties
completing noisier works earlier in the night, where possible
providing signage, traffic controllers and detours to guide you.

Traffic management at times to assist pedestrians.

9pm, Tuesday 18 August to mid-September

Activity

Installing large beams, concrete panels, traffic barriers and noise wall post and panels
Concreting works including large concrete pours
Installing drainage and light pole and traffic signal services
Excavating, profiling, asphalting, kerb construction and line marking
Building bored piling foundations
Sheet piling works which involves vibrating large metal sheets into the ground.

Detours in place (see above)
Moderate levels of noise during 24/7 works
Increase in construction vehicles, trucks and machinery in the area
Bus routes 305, 309 and 905 will not service the bus stop located on the Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp during this time
Traffic management at times to assist pedestrians.
