We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.

What you need to know

A big year of upgrades is underway on the Eastern Freeway, with major works in progress from Burke to Tram roads. Here's what you need to know for February and March.

Burke to Bulleen roads, Eastern Freeway interchange

We’ll move traffic onto temporary lanes between Burke and Bulleen roads on both sides of the freeway to create new work areas. Line markings and signs will be in place to guide you through the area.

From mid-March we’ll start 24/7 works to install drainage under the freeway near the Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp.

At the Bulleen interchange, piling and concrete works will continue to build the foundations for a widened Bulleen Road bridge, new freeway ramps, retaining walls and shared path underpasses. In February, we’ll continue installing huge T-shaped beams for the elevated and realigned Bulleen Road and begin removing the eastern footpath on Bulleen Road bridge.

Doncaster interchange

On Doncaster Road, we’re building temporary freeway ramps and relocating bus stops, continuing to shift utilities services and traffic signals, and installing foundations for a new bridge over the freeway.

At the Doncaster Park and Ride site, we’re preparing the space to build a temporary Ringwood-bound entry ramp. Temporary bus stops on Doncaster Road are open.

This month, we’ll start building foundations for the new Heyington Avenue bridge on the Valda Wetlands side of the freeway while the Estelle Street bridge foundation works continues.

When are we working

Day works: 6am to 7pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturdays.

Night works: 7pm to 6am, Monday to Saturday.

Expect intermittent lane and ramp closures and speed reductions on the Eastern Freeway at night.

Sections of the Koonung Creek Trail are closed with diversions in place.

We'll carry out most of our works during the day, although some extended hours and night works will be required, particularly when working near live traffic and on the freeway. These works will be managed in accordance with the project's strict Environmental Performance Requirements. If you ever have concerns about construction impacts, call us on 1800 105 105.

North East Link Tunnels and future Manningham Road Interchange

Works are continuing on both sides of Bulleen Road as tunnelling continues on the North East Link. During this time, there may be lane closures and traffic management in place to safely guide you through the area.

Please plan your trip and allow additional travel time. See latest information on traffic disruptions.
