28 May 2026

We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway between Tram and Springvale roads with new express lanes, upgraded entry and exit ramps, smart traffic technology and a connection to North East Link – slashing travel times and improving travel in Melbourne’s east.

What we're doing

We're building elevated ramps between Tram and Middleborough roads to separate express and local trips and ease congestion while merging on and off the freeway. We'll also improve access to Eram Park with new walking and cycling bridges at Eram Road and Koonung Creek and upgrades to Koonung Creek Trail.

In response to community feedback received through the project's Environment Effects Statement, the design for the ramps has been simplified for easier trips, less traffic disruption during construction, and more space for landscaping near homes.

From May 2026, we'll start building the underground foundations of the new elevated ramps. This involves drilling deep holes into the ground using piling rigs. We'll then fill the holes with steel cages and concrete using cranes and concrete trucks to create a strong foundation.

Works will continue throughout 2026 as we prepare to build structures above ground including the new Eram Road walking and cycling bridge. We'll use piling rigs, cranes, excavators and concrete trucks to complete these works.

Where and when

Day works: 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm Saturdays

We'll work within our existing worksites between Tram and Middleborough roads.

Night works: 7pm to 6am from Monday to Friday

We'll mostly work during the day, however we may need to make deliveries of large machinery at night.

What to expect

  • Construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area
  • Medium to high levels of noise, dust and vibration from machinery at times
  • Traffic controllers and signage to guide cyclists and pedestrians around our works.

To stay safe, please follow all instructions on signage and follow the direction of traffic controllers. We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout these works.

Managing impacts

We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements including:

  • monitoring noise and vibration levels with real time monitoring
  • preventing dust and water runoff with environmental barriers
  • tree protection zones will be in place around retained vegetation
  • using water carts and street sweepers to manage dirt on local roads where required.

Keeping in touch

We’ll be out talking to nearby residents and businesses about these works in more detail, including how we’ll manage local impacts. If you have any questions now, please contact the 24/7 Contact Centre on 1800 105 105.
