18 August 2025

We're upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne's first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.

What we're doing

Due to space constraints within our worksite, from late-August we'll need to extend working hours in Sargent Street to complete bored piling into the early evening.

From early-September we'll work overnight to start less noisy activities such as steel fixing and some concrete works.

To build the foundations for retaining walls and noise walls, we'll use a technique known as ‘bored piling’. This involves using a piling rig to drill holes into the ground to be filled with steel cages and concrete.

These works include:

  • steel fixing works on the newly excavated piles overnight
  • concrete pouring to fill the newly excavated piles
  • spraying concrete between piles to retain ground structure, known as shotcreting
  • concrete works for base slabs
  • backfilling the area with excavated material.

When are we working

  • Day works - 7am to 7pm from Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm Saturdays
  • Night works - 7pm to 7am from Monday to Friday.

If future night works are required we will provide additional notification.

What to expect

  • Low to medium levels of noise, vibration and dust from machinery and equipment.
  • Construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area.
  • Site access and deliveries via the Eastern Freeway.
  • Use of directional lighting.
  • Traffic management.

Managing impacts

We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements, including:

  • managing impacts on a case-by-case basis. If you are concerned about impacts from this work, please contact us about available respite options
  • temporary timber fencing installed to reduce noise and visual impacts for residents
  • monitoring noise, dust and vibrations levels with real time monitoring technology
  • minimising light spill with targeted directional lighting when working at night
  • preventing dust and water runoff using street sweepers and water carts.
