10 March 2026
We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new Eastern Busway, smart technology and a connection to North East Link – slashing travel times and improving travel in Melbourne’s east.
What we're doing
In March, we’ll set up works areas on the freeway shoulders to relocate underground sewers and make space for new freeway lanes between Middleborough Road to Springvale Road.
Over the coming months, we'll:
- mark and protect trees to be retained
- install and modify traffic barriers on the freeway shoulder
- build construction vehicle access points behind traffic barriers on the Middleborough Road entry ramp and the freeway shoulder
- remove a small section of noise wall behind Gedye Street, Doncaster East
- clear and level the ground to build worker parking and laydown areas next to the freeway
- trim and remove selected trees and vegetation next to the freeway
- install temporary fencing to secure work areas
- build shafts and maintenance holes to relocate underground sewers.
Where and when
Day works: 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm Saturdays
Behind traffic barriers on the freeway shoulder.
Night works: 7pm to 6am from Monday to Friday
We'll mostly work during the day, however some works will be undertaken at night behind freeway traffic barriers, including building construction vehicle access from the freeway. We'll inform residents about planned night works ahead of time.
What to expect
- Construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers in the area
- Overnight lane and ramp closures and traffic management on the freeway
- Low to moderate levels of noise, dust and vibration at times
- Use of directional lighting when working at night
- Visual changes due to the removal of selected trees and a section of noise wall behind Gedye Street
Managing impacts
We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements including:
- working during the day, where possible
- monitoring noise and vibration levels with real time monitoring
- minimising light spill with targeted lighting
- preventing dust and water runoff with environmental barriers.
Keeping in touch
We’ll be out talking to nearby residents and businesses about these works in more detail, including how we’ll be managing any local impacts.
