5 June 2025

We’re completing the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough including a seamless connection to North East Link.

Work is progressing to build the new road connection to North East Link over the Hurstbridge Line, including extending the rail tunnel between Grimshaw Street and Elder Street, and rebuilding Grimshaw Street bridge.

In July, we're continuing construction with 24-hour works for four weeks, with buses replacing trains on sections of the Hurstbridge Line.

What we'll be doing

Continuing construction of new road and rail infrastructure including:

  • installing traffic barriers, fencing and lighting to establish temporary works areas
  • excavation and earthworks to install drainage – boring holes and pouring concrete to build columns for the tunnel and bridge
  • cutting, digging and drilling to relocate utility services under the rail line
  • installing new overhead cables near the Grimshaw Rail Bridge
  • delivering and installing large concrete segments to build the tunnel and bridge
  • building retaining walls to support the new structures
  • installing a new tunnel services building near Watsonia Station
  • constructing footpaths and stairways along the rail line from Watsonia Station to Grimshaw Street
  • installing new track and line equipment.

Where and when we’ll be working

We’ll be working in the rail corridor between Watsonia Station and Grimshaw Street, and on nearby local roads and streets.

24-hour works will take place from the evening of Monday 30 June to Thursday 24 July.

We’ll be in touch with residents who are likely to be impacted to discuss respite and support options if required.

What to expect

As we do these works you may notice:

  • an increase in noise, light, dust and intermittent vibration
  • workers and construction traffic on local roads
  • heavy trucks, machinery and equipment such as excavators, cranes, piling rigs and saws
  • materials and equipment deliveries to and from worksites including out-of-hours via road and rail
  • AK Lines Reserve site compound operations, including construction traffic access.

Managing noise at night and other impacts

The project has strict requirements to manage construction impacts, such as noise at night, with real time monitoring to protect the local community and environment.

We plan our works to minimise these disruptions with various methods such as installing noise barriers, changing construction methods and scheduling noisy works during the day.

We recognise however that disruptive works can be inconvenient, and we are speaking with affected households to arrange relevant measures to help minimise the disturbance.

We understand that there are current local road and pedestrian closures in the area. The map below provides details of detours and access changes to help you navigate these adjustments.
