4 February 2025
We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with smart technology, new Eastern Busway, and a connection to North East Link – slashing travel times and improving travel in Melbourne’s east.
What we're doing
From mid-January to March 2026, we’ll be building a worksite on the Burke Road off ramp in preparation for major construction of the Burke Road interchange.
These works involve modifying the existing intersection to create more space on the shoulder of Burke Road and Eastern Freeway Ringwood-bound carriageway to establish a works area. Works include:
- Locating services using non-destructive digging
- Saw cutting, digging and drilling to modify the intersection, including re-configuring lanes, median, kerbs and traffic signals
- Barrier installation and temporary line marking
- Building a temporary retaining wall
- Completing earthworks to build up ground levels for a temporary off-ramp
- Removing selected trees and vegetation under arborist supervision.
When and where
Day works: 7am to 7pm from Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturdays
Night works: 7pm to 7am from Monday to Friday.
What to expect
- Lane closures at night on Burke Road Ringwood-bound exit ramp in late January and early February
- Burke Road off ramp closure at night on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 February 2026 with a detour via Bulleen Road
- Varying levels of noise, light, dust and intermittent vibration during work hours
- Construction vehicles, trucks and machinery in the area.
Managing impacts
- We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements including:
- Use of watercarts and street sweepers to reduce dust and mud on roads
- Directing light away from residential properties
- Completing noisier works earlier in the night, where possible
- Signage, traffic controllers and detours in place to guide drivers and pedestrians around the area during the closure.
