10 August 2026
We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with smart technology, a new Eastern Busway, and a connection to North East Link – slashing travel times and improving travel in Melbourne’s east.
From 10 August, we'll be working at night to inspect the freeway, carry out any necessary repairs, and prepare the side of the road for new lighting poles. We'll also trim and remove selected trees and vegetation within the road reserve where needed.
These works are an important step towards laying the final road surface and installing permanent lighting, helping to create a safer and more reliable journey for drivers.
Works include:
- lane closures along the Eastern Freeway between Burke Road and Chandler Highway from 9pm to 5am
- earthworks and use of rollers to repair the road surface and reinstate lanes at the end of each shift
- inspecting trees for wildlife and safely relocating animals under the supervision of an ecologist where needed
- trimming and removing selected trees and vegetation in the road reserve to prepare for new freeway lighting
- investigating underground services.
Where and when
- Night works: 7pm to 5am Monday to Saturday
Eastern Freeway between Burke Road and Chandler Highway
Where possible we will complete noisier works earlier in the night. If night works are expected to impact your property, we’ll let you know ahead of time.
What to expect
- Signage and traffic controllers to safely guide road users through the area.
- Directional lighting used while working at night.
- Noise and vibration from machinery and equipment, which we’ll minimise as much as possible.
- Use of Chandler and Burke construction compounds to support 24/7 works.
- Up to 3 lanes closed on the Eastern Freeway travelling citybound at times.
Managing impacts
We carefully manage our works in line with the project's strict Environmental Performance Requirements (EPRs) including:
- monitoring noise, dust and vibration levels with real-time electronic monitoring, ensuring compliance with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria guidelines
- directing lighting away from residential properties
- using qualified ecologists onsite during tree tagging and removal.
