We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with a new Eastern Busway, better walking and cycling connections, smart technology and a link to North East Link – supporting faster, safer and more reliable travel across Melbourne’s east.

What we're doing

We're continuing work in the centre median and next to the freeway to prepare foundations for new bridges, overhead signage and lighting. New traffic management technology is also being installed which will deliver real time traffic monitoring to support more reliable journeys for road users.

When are we working?

Day works: 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm, Saturdays and Sundays
Night works: 7pm to 7am, Monday to Saturday
Day and night works at times during day and night works hours

Upcoming freeway disruptions

Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions between Bulleen Road and Springvale Road for a full weekend in mid August, including a closure of the Chandler Highway Ringwood bound entry ramp. Delays of up to 90 minutes are expected.
Overnight lane and ramp closures will occur at times in July and August.

July 2026 – Zone 1

Zone 1: Hoddle Street to Yarra Boulevard

New and ongoing works

Activity

Day and night works:

Using a high-pressure hose and CCTV cameras to identify underground utilities
Installing cables for new traffic management technology

What to expect

Traffic controllers and signage to safely move road users through the area
At times, lane closures, parking restrictions and temporary delays on Maugie Street, Trenerry Crescent and Yarra Bend Road
Temporary closure of informal path at northern side of WJ Cox Oval. Detour via Deep Rock Road
Low to moderate noise, vibration and dust with continuous mitigations in place
Use of directional lighting
At times, overnight deliveries to worksites
Construction vehicles and equipment in the area

Removing trees and vegetation
Building a construction compound
Building hard working platforms for heavy machinery
Using a piling rig to build foundations for the walking and cycling bridge over the Yarra River
Installing underground drainage
Installing cables for new traffic management technology
Foundation, strengthening and upgrade of existing Yarra Bridge

What to expect

Traffic controllers and signage to safely move road users through the area
Low to moderate noise, vibration and dust with continuous mitigations in place
Tree tagging and removal as necessary
Oversized deliveries for office sheds
Construction vehicles and equipment in the area
Temporary diversions of the River Circuit Trail with signage in place
Qualified ecologist to oversee flora, fauna and waterway protection in the area

Removing trees and vegetation and building construction access into construction site
Using a high-pressure hose and CCTV cameras to identify underground utilities
Building a trench and underground bore to install cables for new traffic management technology and relocate underground power and sewer line
Using a piling rig to build the foundations of new traffic barriers, lighting, and overhead signage
Shifting existing traffic barriers
Removing the top layer of asphalt and installing temporary line marking
Removal of high mast light poles
Installing temporary electronic signage and lighting

What to expect

Tree tagging and removal as necessary
Low to moderate dust and vibration with continuous mitigations in place

Zone 2: Yarra Boulevard to Peel Street

Installing and shifting traffic barriers to establish safe work areas
Installing cables for new traffic management technology

What to expect

Traffic controllers and signage on Yarra Boulevard and Wiltshire Drive
At times, temporary traffic, cyclist and pedestrian delays
Access via Wiltshire Drive into the works area
Use of directional lighting
At times, overnight deliveries to worksites
Low to moderate noise, vibration and dust with continuous mitigations in place

Activity

Day and night works:

Excavating, earthworks and building foundations for the new busway and retaining walls
Installing underground drainage
Building hard working platforms for heavy machinery
Pavement widening works
Building structures to support the new busway bridge

What to expect

Overnight deliveries of materials
Traffic controllers and signage to safely move road – users through the area
Main Yarra Trail diversion with signage in place
Use of directional lighting
Low to moderate noise, vibration and dust with continuous mitigations in place
Storage of construction machinery and equipment
At times, overnight lane and ramp closures

Day and night works:

Installing cables for new traffic management technology
Shifting of existing fencing around works area

What to expect

Pedestrian access changes into the reserve. Kellett Grove will remain open at all times
Construction vehicles and equipment in the area
Low to moderate noise, vibration and dust with continuous mitigations in place

At times, traffic controllers, barriers and signage in place on Belford Road and Kilby Road
Construction vehicles, worker facilities, and equipment in the area
Intermittent closures of bus stops along Kilby Road, between Willsmere Road and Belford Road, see bus stop signage for more information
At times lane and pedestrian path closures on Belford Road, between Kilby Road and Wattle Road
Use of 8 Minogue Street to temporarily store equipment, materials, and workforce facilities
Tree tagging and removal as necessary

Use of water carts and street sweepers to manage dust and mud tracking
