15 January 2026

We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with smart technology, new Eastern Busway, and a connection to North East Link – slashing travel times and improving travel in Melbourne’s east.

What we're doing

From mid January to March, we’ll be installing underground cables adjacent to the freeway in Kate Campbell Reserve to provide power for Intelligent Transport System (ITS) devices. ITS uses technology such as sensors, cameras and CCTV to monitor traffic in real time, electronic signs and message boards to provide driver updates, and systems that adjust speed limits, lane use and freeway entry signals based on current conditions. These devices will help improve traffic flow and safety on the Eastern Freeway.

From mid January, we’ll begin setting up our worksite within the reserve along the noise wall, between Princess Street and Kilby Road, Kew.

Works will include:

  • establishing a safe work area by installing temporary fencing and localised traffic management
  • removing selected trees and vegetation under the supervision of an arborist
  • earthworks to establish trenches approximately 45cm wide
  • installing underground conduits where cabling will run
  • reinstatement of trenched area with the previously excavated materials.

When and where

Day works: 7am to 7pm from Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturdays

Night works: 7pm to 7am from Monday to Friday.

What to expect

  • Pedestrian access to Kate Campbell Reserve from Princess Street is temporarily closed. Please use Kellett Grove
  • Install fencing and signage and remove trees and vegetation and undertake trenching
  • Visual changes in the area due to vegetation removal and changed fencing
  • Increased presence of construction vehicles, machinery, equipment and workers
  • Site access and deliveries via Princess Street
  • Medium to high levels of noise, dust and vibration associated with construction activities

Managing impacts

We carefully manage our work in line with the project's strict environmental performance requirements, including:

  • installing temporary fencing in sections of Kate Campbell Reserve
  • monitoring noise, dust and vibration levels with real-time electronic monitoring, ensuring compliance with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria guidelines
  • managing dust and water on local roads by using street sweepers and water carts.
