We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne’s first express busway, and a seamless connection to North East Link.

We’ll continue to rebuild the wetlands area near Valda Avenue in Mont Albert North, including new waterways, shared paths, noise walls, and express lanes on the Eastern Freeway.

What we're doing

Over the coming months, we’ll be working in a range of areas between Doncaster Road and Tram Road to continue these important upgrades.

This notice provides a lookahead to the upcoming work activities you can expect.

Where and when?

  • Day works - 7am to 7pm from Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm Saturdays
  • Night works - 5pm to 7am, Monday to Sunday

We’ll provide advance notice and speak directly with residents as works progress.
Our team will also work closely with residents regarding any extra support they may need during works.

Between Elgar Road and Tram Road

From early-March to mid-2026, we'll work in stages day and night, including Saturday and Sundays, to build new noise walls and upgrade the freeway.

Works will include:

  • piling to create concrete foundations for the new noise walls
  • mobilising a 250-tonne and 100-tonne crane to install 225 concrete culverts
  • completing earthworks
  • removing excavated materials from site
  • rock breaking for up to two weeks in March, 7am to 10pm, Monday to Friday
  • installing underground cabling for new on-road technology and street lighting.

Wetlands near Valda Avenue

From early-March until mid-2026 we'll work in stages day and night, including Saturday and Sundays, within the wetlands area to realign and protect the Koonung Creek.

Works will include:

  • excavation to widen the creek bed and complete the installation of a new drainage system
  • piling to create concrete foundations to install five concrete debris controls in the Koonung Creek that prevent branches and rubbish from blocking water flow.

Sargent Street

We'll continue working day and night until mid-2026, building the noise walls and retaining walls along the Eastern Freeway.

Works will at times include:

  • earthworks to level the worksite
  • installing soil nails to support noise and retaining wall construction
  • steel and concrete works to form the concrete foundation for new noise walls.

Jocelyn Avenue

From early March to mid-2026 we'll work in stages day and night to we construct new noise walls and shared paths behind Jocelyn Avenue.

Works will include:

  • earthworks to level the worksite, including building
  • access tracks and platforms for large machinery
  • continuing creek construction works
  • piling to create concrete foundations for the new noise walls and shared paths.

What to expect

  • Construction vehicles, machinery, and workers in the area
  • Medium to high levels of noise, dust, and vibration
  • Site access and deliveries via the Eastern Freeway
  • Lane closures at times along the Eastern Freeway, Doncaster Road, and Elgar Road

Managing impacts

  • Monitoring noise, dust, and vibration levels in real time when required
  • Preventing dust and water runoff with environmental controls
  • Completing noisier works earlier in the night where possible
  • Using directional lighting during night works
