To run more train services on the Gippsland line, additional train stabling is required near Traralgon. This allows trains to begin service on time each day, boosting reliability. Building a larger train stabling facility now will ensure that we can house more trains in future to enable the addition of more services as Gippsland’s population continues to grow.

Train stabling is where trains are parked while not in operation.

While the trains are in the facility they are cleaned internally and prepared for the next day.

A typical train stabling facility operates almost 24 hours a day, approximately an hour before the first train service starts and finishes an hour after the last service ends.

A train stabling facility generally consists of:

  • a fenced, open-air site
  • train tracks
  • connections to the main train line
  • signalling and communication systems
  • CCTV and lighting
  • a building to support operations and amenities for staff
  • designated areas for staff car parking
  • access roads and walkways to the facility.

Stabling yards are critical to ensuring that trains can begin services efficiently each day, providing a reliable train service for passengers.

Without adequate stabling facilities, trains need to travel long distances without passengers, impacting the number of services that can run on the line.
