20 March 2026

Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) will slash travel times across Melbourne – making it easier for people to travel to the places they want to go.

No matter where you live – whether it’s Frankston, Footscray or Fawkner – SRL will mean faster and easier journeys, creating more time to do the things you love – rather than being stuck in traffic or navigating inconvenient journeys across multiple modes of transport.

As Australia’s largest housing project, SRL will not only deliver faster, more reliable travel for Victorians, it will help deliver thousands more homes where they’re needed – right next door to jobs, services, and worldclass public transport.

Works at Glen Waverley are progressing as part of major construction of SRL East. Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have arrived, and will launch from Burwood towards Glen Waverley later this year.

Site establishment works will begin from early 2026 and will continue until mid to late 2026. We’re starting by decommissioning utilities, demolishing existing buildings and setting up a worksite to build the new underground station between Coleman Parade and Montclair Avenue, just south of Glen Waverley Station. We're also reconfiguring and creating new surface-level car parking to maximise the number of car spaces available during construction.

SRL at Glen Waverley

The new underground SRL station will be located in the heart of Glen Waverley, connecting more people to this vibrant retail and hospitality area, and providing better access to universities, jobs and hospitals.

The light-filled station will be surrounded by new public spaces, and walking and cycling links.

About 7,000 passengers are expected to use the new station at Glen Waverley daily when trains start taking passengers in 2035.

Getting ready for tunnelling and the new station

Site establishment

Before construction of the station box begins, we’ll set up the Glen Waverley worksite to keep our workers and the community safe. Site establishment activities include:

  • Demolishing buildings at 46-48 and 44 Montclair Avenue
  • Removing trees and vegetation
  • Decommissioning utility services
  • Reconfiguring parking and building new surface-level car spaces
  • Establishing safe truck routes including entry and exit gates around the worksite
  • Trucking equipment and materials to the worksite
  • Building a shared user path for pedestrians and cyclists on the north side of Coleman Parade, between Myrtle Street and the IKON building
  • Installing site offices and facilities for our workers.

Changes to the way you travel around Glen Waverley

Traffic and pedestrian changes

  • To create the space to safely build the new station, Montclair Avenue will close and will remain closed for the duration of SRL East construction
  • Coleman Parade between Myrtle Street and the IKON building driveway will close and will remain closed for the duration of SRL East construction
  • The former Glendale Street will permanently close
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained around the worksite and into the Glen Waverley activity centre including Kingsway via detours and shared user path for pedestrians and cyclists on Coleman Parade.

Parking

  • To create the space needed for a safe worksite, we will reconfigure car parking between Coleman Parade and Montclair Avenue and create new surface-level car spaces on either side of Myrtle Street
  • We will also relocate the Waverley RSL car park.

Construction vehicle access

  • Trucks will transport materials from the worksite during piling and excavation via two approved routes
  • Truck movements will be carefully planned and managed to minimise impacts on the Glen Waverley activity centre. Trucks will not enter the Kingsway shopping area.

Station box construction

When site establishment is complete, we will begin station box construction, including piling and excavation. These activities are expected to continue until late 2027. The station box will be approximately 35 metres wide, 170 metres long and up to 21 metres deep.

Support for local businesses

Glen Waverley continues to be a great place to shop, work and play while we build SRL East. We have a team dedicated to helping local businesses affected by construction to understand their individual circumstances and how we can best support them.

If you’re a local business owner and want to know more, contact us on 1800 105 105 or gw.traders@srla.vic.gov.au and a member of our team will be in touch.

How we will manage our works

As with all major infrastructure projects, surrounding residents and businesses may experience some impacts during construction. We will minimise impacts to the community by:

  • Installing road safety and detour signage
  • Establishing site buildings, internal access roads, and machinery away from residents where possible
  • Maintaining access for emergency vehicles and buses at all times
  • Maintaining access to homes and businesses
  • Installing fencing and hoarding around the worksite to reduce construction noise and dust
  • Transporting materials from site in covered trucks to minimise dust
  • Providing advance notification to traders and the community
  • Using street sweepers to keep roads clean
  • Using water and dust suppressants
  • Choosing construction equipment and methods to reduce noise, dust and vibration impacts to the community
  • Positioning equipment as far as possible from homes and businesses and turning it off when not in use
  • Scheduling works to minimise impacts where possible.

Communicating impacts

SRL East contractors are on the ground speaking with affected communities and businesses. Regular works notifications are distributed on a monthly and as needed basis, to notify people affected of any upcoming works.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we build the new underground train station at Glen Waverley.
