The West Gate Tunnel Project means less congestion and more reliable travel between Melbourne's west and the city.

Right now, it’s not unusual to experience bumper-to-bumper traffic on the West Gate Freeway or incidents that bring traffic to a stand-still. An incident on the West Gate Bridge can triple travel times for motorists.

The project will provide quicker and safer journeys, remove thousands of trucks from the West Gate Bridge, and give drivers a choice - the tunnel or the bridge.

The project includes

  • 4 more through lanes on the West Gate Freeway between the M80 and the West Gate Bridge
  • 3 express lanes in each direction – M80 to West Gate Bridge
  • twin tunnels and a second river crossing providing an alternative to the West Gate Bridge and new connections to the city’s north
  • smart technology linking with other freeway systems across the city to manage traffic flow and incidents and display travel information.

Construction from early 2018

Construction of the West Gate Tunnel Project is underway.

The project is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban and is being built by construction contractors CPB Contractors and John Holland.

During construction, our focus is on safety and on minimising disruption to motorists, communities and businesses.

We are working hard to make things as easy as possible for residents, commuters and truck drivers as we get the work done.
