The West Gate Tunnel will open in late 2025, providing a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge and improving Victoria's entire transport network.

The project will deliver a number of benefits to those travelling from Bendigo, including:

• improved CityLink connections for seamless travel to and from Melbourne
• another way to travel to and from Melbourne
• opportunities for regional tourism growth through improved accessibility, and
• a stronger and wider West Gate Freeway for travel through to Melbourne's west.

What you’ll notice has changed

• Four more lanes in total on the West Gate Freeway between the M80 Ring Road and the West Gate Bridge including three express lanes in each direction
• Twin tunnels and new bridges, providing new connections and a much needed option for drivers
• New freeway entry and exit ramps and direct connections to Melbourne’s port for freight industry
• Smart technology linking with other freeway systems to manage traffic flow and respond to incidents
• New connections to Melbourne's west from CityLink.

Plan your drive

1. Travelling to Melbourne's inner west via CityLink

From CityLink, you can travel to the western suburbs via a new exit. Travelling south, take the next exit after Dynon Road to travel towards the West Gate Tunnel.

You’ll enter the tunnel near the Maribyrnong River and then you can choose to take exits to the inner west suburbs, or carry onto places like Werribee via the Princes Freeway.

2. Travelling to Melbourne via the M80 Ring Road

You could also choose to take the M80 Ring Road if you want to go to the city, or the western and south eastern suburbs.

West Gate Tunnel

Stay in the left lanes and enter the tunnel near Williamstown Road, just before the West Gate Bridge.

Choose your exit

Once you leave the tunnel you'll need to choose your exit. Follow signs to either:

• CityLink
• Dynon Road in West Melbourne
• Wurundjeri Way or Footscray Road in Docklands

CityLink

Exit here to go to Tullamarine and Essendon Airport, and the northern suburbs.

Dynon Road

Exit here for North and West Melbourne and place like the University of Melbourne, hospitals and the Queen Victoria Market.

Footscray Road

Exit here for Docklands or the southern part of the city.

Wurundjeri Way

Exit here for Marvel Stadium, and the Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations.

West Gate Bridge

Stay in the right express lanes and travel over the West Gate Bridge. Travelling from Bendigo via the West Gate Bridge remains a free journey.

Choose your destination

• Continue onto the south eastern suburbs
• Travel to the city via Montague Street or Power Street
