The West Gate Tunnel will open in late 2025, providing a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge and ensuring more reliable travel between Victoria’s west and Melbourne.

The new road will deliver a number of benefits to those travelling from Geelong and the Surf Coast, including:

  • a new way to travel to and from Melbourne
  • faster and more reliable travel
  • improved access to Melbourne’s western suburbs and central business district
  • more lanes and state-of-the-art road safety technology to keep traffic moving smoothly, reduce congestion and improve on-road safety
  • a better connection to Avalon Airport from Melbourne, supporting domestic travel, and
  • a new way to get to key tourist destinations such as the Bellarine Peninsula and Great Ocean Road.

What you’ll notice has changed

  • Four more lanes in total on the West Gate Freeway between the Princes Freeway and the West Gate Bridge, including three express lanes in each direction
  • Three dedicated express lanes in each direction on the West Gate Freeway that provide quicker and smoother travel to and from Geelong
  • Tunnel entries and exits in the West Gate Freeway and near the Maribyrnong River
  • Bridges providing new connections and destination options for drivers
  • New freeway entry and exit ramps and direct connections to Melbourne’s port for the freight industry

Plan your drive in 3 simple steps

  1. Choose the West Gate Tunnel or the West Gate Bridge
  2. Choose your new options to exit and enter freeway network
  3. Choose final destination for quicker journeys

Travelling to Melbourne

Travelling from Geelong and the Surf Coast, you need to decide on the Princes Freeway if you want to take the West Gate Tunnel or West Gate Bridge.

West Gate Tunnel

Stay in the left lanes from the Princes Freeway to the West Gate Freeway and enter the tunnel near Williamstown Road, just before the West Gate Bridge.

Choose your exit

Once you leave the tunnel you'll need to choose your exit. Follow signs to either:

  • CityLink
  • Dynon Road in West Melbourne
  • Wurundjeri Way or Footscray Road in Docklands

CityLink

Exit here for Melbourne and Essendon Airports, and the northern suburbs

Dynon Road

Exit here for North and West Melbourne and places like the University of Melbourne, hospitals and the Queen Victoria Market

Footscray Road

Exit here for Docklands or the southern part of the city

Wurundjeri Way

Exit here for Marvel Stadium, and Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations

West Gate Bridge

Stay in the right express lanes and travel over the West Gate Bridge. Travelling from Geelong via the West Gate Bridge remains a free journey for light vehicles (such as cars, motorbikes and light commercial vehicles).

Choose your destination

  • Continue onto the south-eastern suburbs
  • Travel to the city via Montague Street or Power Street
