The West Gate Tunnel Project is a vital link in getting Victorians moving again and will reduce the city’s reliance on the West Gate Bridge. A significant part of the project includes widening the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes, going from four to six lanes in each direction.
New lanes are open on the West Gate Freeway between Millers Road and the M80 Ring Road interchange. The freeway is split into two carriageways in each direction with express inner lanes, and outer lanes for freeway entry and exits.
Here's what you need to know
Travelling outbound
Both outbound carriageways between Millers Road and the M80 interchange will take you towards Ballarat (M80 Ring Road) and Geelong (Princes Freeway).
Outer lanes
Use the outer left most lanes to exit and enter at Millers Road and Grieve Parade.
- The left lanes will take you to Princes Freeway (Geelong-bound)
- The right lane will take you to M80 (Ballarat-bound)
Inner lanes
Use the inner dedicated lanes for an easier journey to the M80 Ring Road and Princes Freeway. From the inner lanes drivers will need to stay on:
- The left lanes to get to the M80 Ring Road (Ballarat-bound)
- The right lanes for the Princes Freeway (Geelong-bound)
Travelling inbound
As you travel towards the city,
- Use the outer lanes to get to Millers Road and Williamstown Road exits.
- Stick to the inner lanes for a quicker and easier journey from the M80 Ring Road or Princes Freeway to the West Gate Bridge
Drivers can be in any lane to exit at Williamstown Road as they all join up after Millers Road, but the outer lanes will be an easier journey.
Whether you are travelling from the M80 Ring Road or Princes Freeway, all inbound lanes will take drivers to the West Gate Bridge.
Make sure you follow the permanent green overhead signs on the lanes you are travelling - choose your lane early and avoid last minute lane changes.
