Works notification
Works at the Northern portal on Whitehall Street and surrounding areas have progressed over the year and include a range of activities over the coming months. Below is a summary of works that you can expect to see in the area until April 2021.
Northern Portal
- Completing a portion of the roof deck behind the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) by mid-December. The roof deck provides support while excavating and will also act as a noise barrier for works within the tunnel portal.
- Installing the road deck that sits behind the TBMs until late-January. This is the beginning of constructing the road in the tunnels.
- Structural concreting works will be ongoing until April. When required, these works will also be done at night
Overhead wires relocation works:
- Works to relocate overhead wires, by Jemena, will commence in the New Year along Whitehall Street, Harris Street and in the Yarraville Gardens. We will provide further information before the works start.
Maribyrnong River
- Piling and pier work continues along Maribyrnong Street in preparation of Maribyrnong River bridges installation works in 2021.
- Utility provider will be relocating gas mains along Lyons Street. These works will take place in the first quarter of 2021. Once complete, we will finish the remaining piling in area.
Transporting precast concrete segments
- Ongoing deliveries of precast concrete segments to support the construction of the elevated road and tunnels will be taking place over the next two years. These deliveries will travel on Somerville Road and Francis Street during the day and at times when specially permitted at night, outside of curfew hours.
Hours of work
Our usual hours of work are Monday to Friday between 7am-6pm, and Saturdays between 7am-1pm. However, some of the works outlined in this notification will be undertaken at night. If disruptive works are scheduled out of hours, we will provide you with further information before the works start.
What to expect during these works
- Works completed both during the day and at night.
- We will notify you if there are any significant changes to the timing of our works.
- Construction vehicles will be moving in and out of the work areas via our approved access routes.
- Vibration may be experienced from piling works.
- Water spray trucks and road sweepers will be used to manage dust and dirt during works. * Trucks removing dirt and rock from the site will be covered.
