The team has recently been set up on Frederick Street to undergo verification drilling and testing of the ground conditions due to rectification works on one of our cross passages.
Between the main twin tunnels, a series of cross passages are being excavated to provide a safe connection for road users between the inbound and outbound tunnels in case of emergencies. As part of these works, we need to conduct additional works from aboveground on Frederick Street, Yarraville.
We will continue with two additional verification drillings to approximately 35 metres depth to gather more data and to make sure our rectification works underground are successful as planned. The tunnels are located deep underground beneath a vast ten metre basalt cap, the area is safe and stable. The basalt cap is a very deep layer of hard rock that is >up to four times the strength of concrete.
As is consistent for all of our tunnelling activities, we have monitoring devices that provide regular ground movement information to inform the project team across the whole tunnel alignment.
To complete these works, we will need to close Frederick Street between Stephen Street and Hyde Street between 7am–5pm on Monday 3rd of July – Friday 7th of July.
We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause residents, however access to your property will be maintained with the assistance of traffic controllers.
