Building the new ventilation structure near Newport Railway
We are set to commence works to build the new ventilation structure located within the West Gate Freeway between Millers Road and the Newport Railway. As this is a large structure, there is an ongoing program of works and you will see the new building take shape over the next couple of years.
If any of these works are expected to be particularly disruptive, we will be in touch before they start.

West Gate Tunnel southern ventilation structure (between Millers Road and Newport Railway Line)
Ongoing
Works to build the West Gate Tunnel’s ventilation structure within the West Gate Freeway are set to commence, with the installation of a 60m tower crane that will be used for upcoming construction of the ventilation structure.
The next phase of construction between now and February 2023 will be focused on pouring concrete to form the walls of the structure. The wall height will generally increase in 3m increments during the build. When complete, the new structure will be approximately 50m tall – creating a new landmark along the West Gate Freeway.
Towards the end of the year a ‘jump form system’ will be installed. This is a temporary formwork system which is used for building vertical concrete elements and will assist the wall construction.
These works will also involve concrete and steel deliveries. The majority of these deliveries will be during the day via the West Gate Freeway and Cawley Road.
We will continue to keep you updated as construction of the new ventilation structure progresses.
Works have also commenced on construction of a new electrical substation, which will power the tunnels’ electrical, mechanical and instrumentation components. These works include foundation works, concrete pours, structural steel and installation of precast panels.
