16 June 2023 to 31 August 2023

The West Gate Tunnel Project will provide an alternative to the West Gate bridge, take thousands of trucks off local roads, and provide better connections across the city.

The twin tunnels under Yarraville will connect to a new elevated road above Footscray Road with connections to Dynon Road, Footscray Road and CityLink making it easier to get to and from the city.

Tunnelling of the twin tunnels is now complete, and Footscray Road will reopen on 16 June after a
six-month construction campaign.

For the next stage of building the new connections to the city, the Dynon Road bridge in West Melbourne above the rail lines will be widened and strengthened, and new walking and cycling path safety barriers
will be installed

What to expect and when

From 8pm, Friday 16 June to 7am, Thursday 31 August 2023, Dynon Road will be closed between the CityLink inbound exit ramp and Dryburgh Street, North Melbourne.

At times, the rail lines below the bridge will also be closed. Buses will replace trains on sections of the  Sunbury, Williamstown and Werribee lines at various times in June and July. V-Line services will also
be impacted during July and August. Train replacement buses will operate from North Melbourne Station and Flagstaff Stations. Plan ahead at bigbuild.vic.gov.au/westworks.

Significant delays are expected.

  • Consider working from home between 23 June and 9 July during rail disruptions.
  • If you need to be in the city, it might be quicker to travel on Mondays and Fridays when there are less people on the road and on public transport.
  • Consider leaving home earlier, or later from work to avoid the busiest periods.

If you live close to Dynon Road, you may hear construction noise during the day and at night. We’ll be monitoring impacts to ensure they’re kept to a minimum, and we will work closely with local residents and businesses to respond quickly to queries and requests about noise.

Local businesses in the area remain open and operating during these works.
