Building a new walking and cycling bridge over Footscray Road, Docklands

When we'll be working

From 11.59pm Sunday 11 February to 5am Monday 4 March 2024, there will be continuous closures of Footscray Road.

The West Gate Tunnel Project is building a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over Footscray Road in Docklands. The new iconic cable stay bridge will provide a safer walking and cycling connection to the Docklands area. A major part of its installation will be carried out during the closure of Wurundjeri Way while there is less traffic in the area.

Works and impacts

Footscray Road – eastbound lane closures

Ongoing long-term lane closures along the eastbound carriageway of Footscray Road between Pearl River Road and Waterfront Way from November 2023 to June 2024.

Footscray Road – westbound closure

The Footscray Road westbound carriageway betweenDocklands Drive and Waterfront Way will be closed 24/7 from 11.59pm Sunday 11 February to 5am Monday 19 February 2024. During this time, the left turn from Footscray Road to Waterfront Way will be fully closed.

Footscray Road – closure in both directions

Footscray Road between Docklands Drive and Pearl River Road will be closed 24/7 in both directions from 5am Monday 19 February to 5am Monday 4 March 2024.

You can still access the Docklands area via Pearl River Road and Docklands Drive.

Scope of works

• Bridge construction.
• Civil and drainage works.
• Pylon installation.
• Bridge girder and support cable installation

After these works, long-term lane closures and singular overnight carriageway closures in both directions will occur, as well as intermittent overnight closures of the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail until Monday 24 June 2024.

The upcoming lane and carriageway closures are required for the construction of the new Veloway, which will be commencing from late-April 2024. Further details will be supplied closer to the date.

Noise

You may notice minor construction noise, includingintermittent noise at night.

Depending on type of works and if works are expected to create extra noise, the West Gate Tunnel Project team&  will be in contact with residents directly.

Information for cyclists

During these works, the cycling path on Footscray Road will be diverted via Little Waterfront Way, St Mango Lane and Waterfront Way.

Please watch out for pedestrians and school children.

Changes to the way you travel

Motorists will be able to detour around the closure via Dynon Road. Please see the detour maps.

During this time, Docklands businesses will continue to remain open with access via Dudley Street and Docklands Drive. While this closure is happening, we’ll continue to have traffic  management in place, including signage and controllers to guide traffic through the area
