The West Gate Tunnel Project is about to commence work to build a walking and cycling path on Hall Street between Hudsons Road and the West Gate Bridge.

What we’ll be doing

We’ll be working from week of 11 September to November 2023.

Works include

• Installation of a new fence to protect walking and cycling path users from rail corridor
• Excavation and concreting works, including footpath and kerbing
• Pram crossing near Spotswood Hotel
• Drainage works

A walking and cycling path will be installed between the railway line and Hall Street. The introduction of the shared user path along this area will result in the temporary removal of the parking area next to the railway on Hall Street. Once completed safer parallel parking will be reinstated along Hall Street.

Whilst these works are being undertaken, alternative parking can be found in:

• Simcock Avenue
• Booker Street
• Hall Street – south of Hudsons Road
• The Avenue – adjacent to Don McLean Reserve

A pram crossing will also be established allowing for safer crossing between the walking path and Spotswood Hotel.

Businesses along Hall Street, Simcock Avenue and Hudsons Road will be updated prior to changes and throughout the construction period.

Please note, this work may be subject to approvals and permits and may change due to site and weather conditions.

Impacts

Parking

September 2023

Removal of parking along the rail corridor on Hall Street between Hudsons Road and the West Gate Bridge.

Parking along the eastern side on Hall Street between Hudsons Road and Simcock Avenue directly in front of businesses will remain accessible.

Construction

September 2023 – November 2023

Construction vehicle movements along Hall Street band surrounding streets during construction of walking and cycling path.

Road and lane closures

September 2023 – November 2023

Hall Street north of Simcock Avenue will be closed from mid-September until completion of the shared user path.

Hall Street south of Simcock Avenue will require a single lane closure from late-September, with minor full overnight road closures.

During these closures minor delays will be expected with reduced speeds. Traffic controllers and traffic management will be available to assist road users.

Noise

September 2023 – November 2023

Low level construction noise (Monday – Friday from 7am to 5pm).

You may notice construction noise, including intermittent noise at night.

Depending on type of works and if works are expected to create extra noise, the West Gate Tunnel Project team will be in contact with residents directly.

What to expect during these works

• Construction vehicles including excavators, tandem trucks, water carts and concrete trucks will be moving in and out of the work areas via our access routes.
• Water spray trucks and road sweepers will be used to manage dust and dirt during works.
• Removal of parking along Hall Street. Alternative formal and informal parking can be found in neighbouring streets.
• Traffic changes including lane and road closures may be required. Signed detours will be in place.
