Constructing the southern inbound tunnel entrance near Williamstown Road

We are continuing works at the Inbound Portal near Williamstown Road at the West Gate Freeway. Activities include building the new tunnel portal structure, cross passage excavation and a large temporary crane to lift out the tunnel boring machine.

If any of these works are expected to be particularly disruptive, we will be in touch before they start.

Southern inbound portal (near Williamstown Road)

Ongoing

Works are continuing to build the portal foundations and tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval pit at the citybound entrance to the tunnel. These works include excavation, steel reinforcement and concrete works. Night works will take place between September and October. These works are not expected to be disruptive.

Gantry crane installation

November 2022  (date TBC)

The TBM digging the citybound tunnel is progressing well and ahead of the completion of tunnelling, work will take place to build a temporary gantry crane. The temporary gantry crane will remove the TBM Vida once it is finished its 2.8km journey. The green gantry crane will be built across several weekends in November, with the works to take place 24/7.

The Williamstown Road off ramp at the West Gate Freeway will be closed across the weekends while these works are undertaken.

A reminder will be sent closer to the start of these works. These works are not expected to be disruptive.

Cross passage and smoke duct construction

September – December 2022

The team will build a cross passage and two smoke duct crossings under the cut and cover and retrieval pit at the citybound portal. These are important elements in the tunnel; the cross passage connects the two tunnels for emergency and maintenance while the smoke duct crossings are part of the ventilation system and control the spread of smoke in case of an emergency.

These works will take place 24/7 with daytime works to include mechanical rock excavation and grouting activities. Night works will include low impact noise excavation and stabilisation works, including spraying concrete in the underground excavations. Noise mitigation measures will be implemented during these works and the project team will continuously monitor noise levels.

Residents close to the area will be contacted to discuss these works further if they are expected to be disruptive.

More detail on what you can expect during these works

Water-spray trucks and road sweepers will be used in local streets around our worksites, keeping local roads clean during construction.
