24/7 ramp closures on the West Gate Freeway

From 9pm Tuesday 11 January to 5am Monday 28 February 2022, the West Gate Tunnel Project will carry out major road works to take advantage of lower traffic volumes. Construction activities will take place 24/7 and require road and ramp closures.

After careful planning and with consideration of community and stakeholder feedback, a number of signed, recommended detour routes will be in place to help traffic move around our worksites safely. Multiple detour options are available around each closure – detour maps will be available on the Big Build website. Motorists should allow up to an extra 40 minutes travel time.

What you can expect during the works

  • On-road traffic signage to guide vehicles around the closures via the safest route.
  • Work will be completed behind safety barriers with construction vehicles moving in and out of work areas.
  • Access to businesses will be maintained – please follow detour signage and direction of traffic controllers.
  • Traffic updates via our weekly traffic email, Big Build website, West Gate Tunnel Project social media accounts and radio.
  • Direct contact from the project team if you are expected to be highly impacted by noisy night works.
  • Lighting will be angled away from homes whenever possible when we’re working at night.
  • Pedestrian access underneath the West Gate Freeway at Williamstown Road will be maintained, under traffic management. Please follow signage and /or the instructions of traffic staff in the area.
  • Water-spray trucks and road sweepers used in the local streets around our worksites, keeping local roads clear during construction.

What we need you to do

  • We encourage motorists to plan ahead and prepare for detours and delays.
  • Before you get in the car, we recommend checking the latest travel advice on the Big Build website, via radio traffic reports or real-time applications (Google Maps etc).
  • Motorists should be prepared for high traffic volumes on suggested detour routes and should allow an extra 40 minutes to complete their journey.
  • Road work zones are environments that change regularly, and reduced speeds will sometimes be in place to allow drivers more time to react if there’s an incident. That’s why we ask drivers to slow down and take extracare.
  • While you’re on the road listen to radio traffic reports and look out for digital road signs that will give you realtime advice on travel times and alternative routes.

Other works occurring during the Summer roadworks blitz

  • Noise wall works continuing along the edges of the freeway between Williamstown Road and Grieve Parade.
  • Freeway widening works, including demolition works, above Newport Rail Line / The Avenue underpass
continuing until late-2022. Impacted residents will be notified ahead of these works.
  • The link underneath the freeway between The Avenue and Fogarty Avenue is scheduled to be closed from Monday 17 January until late-January.

Thank you

We appreciate our work can be disruptive and thank you for your understanding. We encourage you to support local businesses in the area that remain open and operating. Please note, works may be rescheduled and dates above are subject to change in the event of unexpected impacts.
