As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, we’ll be putting the final layer of asphalt on the West Gate Freeway (between the M80 interchange and Millers Road), Princes Freeway and the M80 interchange. We will also be doing other construction activities in these areas.

When we’ll be working

We’ll be working 24/7 from 10 January to March 2024. Work hours are day and night.

What we’ll be doing

We’ll be putting the final layer of asphalt on the West Gate Freeway, including the section between Millers Rd and the M80 interchange, Grieve Parade and Millers Road freeway ramps, and sections of the M80 Ring Road and Princes Freeway.

We need to close lanes and ramps on the freeway at times so everyone in the area stays safe while we’re
at work. It also means our crews can work while minimising traffic delays and noisy activity at night.
During this time, other works will also be happening including:

  • Removing temporary asphalt
  • Installing and painting barriers
  • Installing signs
  • Final line marking
  • Installing bridge expansion joints
  • Gantry installation and freeway management system technology
  • Graffiti removal.

These works may have various start dates and occur in stages, as they rely on other works in different areas to be completed before we can start the next stage of works.

Impacts

  • 24/7 construction activity and vehicles moving in and out of the area including excavators, cranes, rollers and water and concrete trucks.
  • Lighting will be angled away from homes whenever possible when we’re working at night.
  • Construction noise, including intermittent noise at night.

Changes to the way you travel

  • Traffic conditions will change during all stages be aware of advisory and speed signs.
  • Vehicles will be diverted around the freeway works.
  • Temporary line markings will assist drivers as well as traffic signage and management
  • Travel impacts are expected up to 30 minutes. Please prepare ahead of time.

When driving through these areas, please follow traffic signage and check traffic media reports. Please note, dates and times for this work may be subject to approvals, permits, site conditions and weather.
