With tunnelling activities coming to an end, we need to dismantle and remove the large gantry crane which has been used to remove the Tunnel Boring Machine, and other large equipment that was used to build the internal components of the tunnel, from the tunnelling site near Williamstown Road.
To safely remove the crane from the southern tunnel entry construction area, we will need a 24/7, 10-day closure of the exit ramp from the West Gate Freeway inbound to Williamstown Road between 9pm, Friday 20 October to 5am, Monday 30 October 2023. A detour will be in place during the ramp closure. Drivers will need to exit at Millers Road and use Geelong Road or Blackshaws Road instead.
Oversized vehicles will also have to use an alternative route during this time, which means that residents are likely to see an increased number of trucks on Francis Street.
The truck routes have been determined in consultation with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to ensure the safest routes are used.
We know inner west communities are keen to get trucks off local roads and are pleased to advise that construction truck numbers are continuing to reduce as we move closer to the end of all tunnelling activities.
What to expect:
- 24/7, 10-day closure of the Williamstown Road inbound exit ramp from the West Gate Freeway from 9pm, 20 October to 5am, 30 October 2023.
- Increased truck movements on Francis Street during the ramp closure.
- Trucks have been advised to exit at Millers Road and follow the signed detour route of Geelong Road and Williamstown Road.
- Trucks that exceed the 77 tonnes weight restriction on Geelong Road have been advised to use Francis Street.
Further information
While this is the information currently available for these movements, the nature of the works in the retrieval pits means that dates may change as works progress.
