Construction works at The Avenue slip lane and Melbourne Road (northbound)
The West Gate Tunnel Project is due to carry out construction activities at The Avenue slip lane and Melbourne Road / Williamstown Road (northbound), from 9pm Wednesday 15 March 2023 to Monday 7 May 2023. This will require staged closures of both areas as outlined in the map within the notification.
What we will be working on:
- Traffic island removal
- Pavement rebuilding
- Walking and cycling path construction
- Permanent lighting installations
- Drainage works
- Kerb rebuild / completions
- Line marking
These work activities will allow the slip lane from The Avenue to Melbourne Road (northbound) to be realigned, in turn creating a safer arrangement for road users and vehicles.
Please note these works may be subject to approvals and permits and may change due to site and weather conditions.

Ongoing works on or next to the freeway including overhead gantry installations, completion of freeway verge works, freeway technology system works, construction / demolition works, and ongoing noise wall works. To reduce traffic disruption on the freeway, some of these works will take place | Ongoing |
Overnight closures of Williamstown Road and freeway ramps. There will be closures of Williamstown Road underneath the freeway in one or both directions for the installation of beams for the Hyde Street ramps, the walking and cycling path, and noise wall installation. We appreciate our work can be disruptive and thank you for your understanding, particularly during our recent summer roadworks where we were able to completely rebuild the Melbourne Road to West Gate Freeway outbound ramp and install new freeway drainage systems.
Works may be rescheduled in the event of unexpected impacts.
