16 August 2024

Works around the northern entry and exit for the West Gate Tunnel on Whitehall Street and surrounds continue to progress. The Harris Street walking and cycling path is advancing and the team is preparing for the final piece to be lifted and installed.

When we’ll be working

We’ll continue to work from August – December 2024.

Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, Saturday, 7am –1pm and Sunday, 7am – 9am.

What we’ll be doing

From mid-August, works at the northern entry and exit of the West Gate Tunnel in Yarraville will include upgrading pavement, drainage works on Whitehall Street, removing the large gantry crane from within the construction site and other construction activities related to the Harris Street walking and cycling bridge.

There will be changes to the traffic flow and parking availability throughout the works which are required to complete construction.

We will keep the community informed of these changes throughout the works.

What to expect

  • We expect works to upgrade the North Yarra Mains Sewer which are currently underway on Somerville Road at the intersection with Whitehall Street to conclude on 11 August 2024.
  • We’ll then begin drainage and upgrading pavement works on Whitehall Street between Youell Street and Somerville Road from Tuesday 13 August to Sunday 1 September. The large green 250 tonne crane which has been operating in the project’s Whitehall Street site will be dismantled and removed between September – October. To safely carry out the works, we’ll need to close the walking and cycling path, a single lane in the southbound direction and parking lane on Whitehall Street between Youell Street and Somerville Road.
  • An overnight full southbound closure of Whitehall Street will also be required to safely set up and pack down the site area. This is expected to take place from 8pm – 5am on Tuesday 13 August and then again on Sunday 1 September 2024.
  • To install the new Whitehall Street pedestrian and cycle bridge, a full closure of Whitehall Street in both directions between Somerville Road and Youell Street is required from 7pm Saturday 31 August – 9am Sunday 1 September.
  • Once the bridge has been installed, we will require various overnight lane closures in both the northbound and southbound directions on Whitehall Street to install the remaining panelling directly onto the bridge. An overnight full closure of Whitehall Street between Somerville Road and Youell Street will be required for the road deck concrete pour for the walking and cycling path over Whitehall Street.
  • 24/7 construction vehicle movements, including trucks transporting crane parts, construction materials and accessing site will occur via Whitehall Street and surrounds.
  • Minor construction related noise, including nightworks.

We appreciate our work can be disruptive and thank you for your understanding. Works may be rescheduled in the event of unexpected impacts.

We’ll inform local communities of closures via bigbuild.vic.gov.au/disruptions, social media and email.
