11 January 2024
From January 2024, the West Gate Tunnel Project will continue building the elevated walking and cycling path along Harris Street. It will go over Whitehall Street and into the new recreation area near the northern entry and exit of the tunnel.
We’ll need to temporarily change traffic along Whitehall Street, and on Harris Street between Cowper Street and Whitehall Street.
What we’ll be doing
When we’ll be working
We’ll be working from January–December 2024.
Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm with various night shifts to be scheduled.
Harris Street (between Cowper Street and Whitehall Street) will be fully closed at certain points from 15 January–April 2024, Whitehall Street will need to close at night during specific stages of the path construction.
Building the Harris Street walking and cycling path's last stage is due to start in January 2024.
These works will include pavement upgrades, crosshead construction, lifting precast beams for bridge construction, cladding, and balustrading.
What to expect
- Harris Street closed between Cowper and Whitehall Streets.
- Whitehall Street closed for the delivery and installation of precast bridge segments.
- Drainage installation and verge establishment on Harris Street between Hyde and Cowper Streets.
- Concrete pours, shaping and fitting steel.
- Final traffic arrangement for Harris Street which involves a permanent closure between Hyde Street and Cowper Street.
We want locals to keep enjoying Yarraville Gardens and Kindred Café so we have established signed detours to help you find your way. Please see the map for detours during stage one and keep up your support of local traders.
Other works in the area
- We work closely with council to minimise disruption to the community as much as possible.
- The Maribyrnong City Council is planning to undertake redevelopment works on Cowper Street between Harris Street and Lyons Street in March 2024. This aligns with timeframes for the West Gate Tunnel works and will help reduce construction impact to the community.
- Redeveloping Cowper Street will create shared open green spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy, as well as improving safety and accessibility for all road users.
- Works on Hyde Street are due to commence in late 2024, including asphalting and line marking.
