29 Feb 2024:

This set of construction works will end at 5pm, Friday 8 March 2024.

When we’ll be working

We’ll be working 24/7 from 9pm, Wednesday 7 February to 5am, Saturday 24 February, including weekends.

Westbound travel on Somerville Road (between Whitehall Street and Hyde Street) will be closed.

What we'll be doing

Now we have finished tunnelling, we need to reconstruct a manhole as part of the North Yarra Main Sewer realignment.

The West Gate Tunnel Project team will be set up at the junction of Whitehall Street and Somerville Road, where the manhole is located.

To complete these works, westbound travel on Somerville Road between Whitehall Street and Hyde Street will not be permitted, 24/7 from 9pm, Wednesday 7 February to 5am, Saturday 24 February, including weekends.

Detours for the closure are highlighted within the map.

The closure includes an overnight set up and pack up period where there will be further restrictions on vehicle travel to ensure safety of the team whilst preparing the site for works.

Existing heavy vehicle regulations and truck bans will still apply during these works.

What to expect

Minimal construction noise:

  • Road excavation works may be noisy, at times.
  • We will do our best to manage this noise impact.

Construction related vehicle movements:

  • There will be trucks entering and exiting the work site.

Travelling westbound on Somerville Road (between Whitehall and Hyde St) will be closed:

  • Closed 9pm, Wednesday 7 February to 5am, Saturday 24 February, including weekends.
  • Vehicles will only be able to turn left onto Whitehall Street travelling eastbound on Somerville Road.
  • Detours are highlighted in the map overleaf.

Overnight closures for set up/pack up:

  • Further restrictions will apply as per overleaf.

Cyclists and Pedestrians:

  • These works will not permit the pedestrian crossing that crosses Somerville Road, on the side of northbound travel on Whitehall Street. There will still be access to cross Whitehall Street and cross Somerville Road on the side of southbound travel.
  • The on-road bike lane on Somerville Road will be closed in the direction from Whitehall Street to Hyde Street.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists can still use the shared user path on either side of Somerville Road.
