When we’ll be working
Ongoing work in 2025 will continue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What we'll be doing
The West Gate Tunnel Project is on track to deliver more than 18km of upgraded freeways and 14km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths by the end of 2025. Following recent road resurfacing works, Pearl River Road has been reopened in both directions and traffic disruptions on Footscray Road are decreasing.
These enhancements provide a smoother driving experience and easier access to the Docklands when travelling from the West. Additionally, we’re working on new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, providing new and improved connections to the Docklands for pedestrians and cyclists from the Capital City Trail, Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, and the western suburbs.
Throughout 2025, construction activities will continue in the Port to City area to bring the project closer to completion.
Upcoming activities include applying a final layer of asphalt on the elevated roads, bridges, and remaining sections of Footscray and MacKenzie roads.
Additional works will involve installing cladding, lighting, utilities, and signage, as well as landscaping, road reinstatements, and completing walking and cycling path connections.
While the project endeavours to undertake works during normal construction hours, some activities will be required to occur at night in certain areas during low traffic periods.

Works and impacts
Maribyrnong Street
Construction activities on Maribyrnong Street will continue with the removal of the construction hardstand and reinstatement of road surfaces, open spaces, parking facilities and walking and cycling paths. To undertake these works, moderate levels of noise and vibration are expected.
Cladding and asphalting of the bridges over the Maribyrnong River and Maribyrnong Street will also continue.
Temporary removal of on-street car parks, shortterm lane closures and temporary traffic changes will be required at times on Maribyrnong Street between Shepherd Bridge and Lyons Street to facilitate reinstatement, road resurfacing and line marking works
MacKenzie Road
Utility installations, road resurfacing, signage and line marking activities will be continuing until mid-2025.
Sections of Mackenzie Road, including between Sims Street and Sims Street’s southern loop, will be fully closed overnight on intermittent nights, from 8pm to 5am to enable works.
Drainage installation works on the monument shared use path will continue throughout this period.
Sims Street
Temporary partial and full closures of Sims Street and its southern loop will be required intermittently 8pm to 5am until mid-May, to enable utility installations and reinstatement works.
Footscray Road and elevated road
Bus stop reinstatement works will take place on Footscray Road between Sims Street and Dock Link Road. Temporary closures of the northern footpath on Footscray Road will be required along this section to enable these works with detours in place for pedestrians.
Utility installations, landscaping, rectification works, and walking/cycling path reinstatements will continue on Footscray Road between Maribyrnong Street and Waterfront Way.
Short term single, double and carriageway closures will be required on Footscray Road to enable these ongoing construction activities including testing and commissioning of services, installing lighting and signage, and road surfacing in some sections.
On the elevated road structures, civil and utility works will continue. Some overnight road resurfacing, asphalting and line marking works will be occurring until mid-2025 with construction lighting in use at night to ensure safety.
CityLink
Testing and commissioning works will continue throughout 2025, along with civil activities and minor rectification works surrounding inbound and outbound ramps. There will be short term single, double and triple lane carriageway closures in both directions on CityLink between Footscray Road and Dynon Road, occurring intermittently until August 2025 to enable testing and commissioning activities
CityLink inbound and outbound ramp closures at Footscray Road and Dynon Road will also be required until mid-2025 to enable civil rectification works. More information will be provided closer to these works.
Dynon Road
Remaining works around Dynon Road will involve short term and intermittent overnight lane closures, to enable testing, commissioning and reinstatement activities, concrete barrier movements, and road resurfacing works near the ramps.
North Melbourne
Lighting, signage and utility installation works will continue until mid-2025 on Dryburgh, Victoria and Spencer streets. Please note that some works will be required to occur at night outside of peak traffic periods with temporary lane closures on Dryburgh Street and surrounding streets to enable the works.
We’ll be undertaking utility installation works along the northern footpath between Anderson, Stawell and Dryburgh streets. These works will require a continuous, full closure of the footpath for approximately five weeks, with a temporary detour diverting users onto Ireland Street.
These works will also require the temporary removal of three car parks on Anderson Street. Please note, during these works, access to the dog park between Stawell Street and Dryburgh Street will not be available. Construction noise and vibration is expected during these works.
Wurundjeri Way
Planting and landscaping works will recommence on Wurundjeri Way between Dudley and Flinders streets with some lane and overnight closures required. These works will occur at night, outside of peak traffic periods.
