2 April 2024
From January 2024, the West Gate Tunnel Project has been building the elevated walking and cycling path along Harris Street over Whitehall Street.
We’ll need to change traffic flow in the area before the permanent change of closing Harris Street between Hyde Street and Cowper Street is implemented.
What we’ll be doing
When we’ll be working
We’ll be working from April–December 2024.
Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 2.30pm. Various night shifts to be scheduled between 8pm to 5am for bridge segment deliveries.
Building the Harris Street walking and cycling path is due to start be completed in December 2024.
The next phase of these works will include pavementupgrades, crosshead construction, delivering and lifting precast beams for bridge construction, cladding, balustrading, deck pours, and painting works.
Building the Harris St and Cowper St intersection curb will also take place over the coming months which will involve a temporary Harris St closure. We’ll be in touch before these works begin.
What to expect
- Harris Street remains closed between Cowper and Whitehall Streets.
- No right turns from Cowper St onto Harris St in April.
- Left turns into Cowper St from Harris St allowed
- Overnight disruptions on Whitehall St to safely deliver the large bridge segments between 8pm–5am.
We want locals to keep enjoying Yarraville Gardens, Kindred Studios and Kindred Café so we have establisheddetours to help you find your way.
Please see the map for detours during stage one and keep up your support of local traders.
Other works in the area
Maribyrnong City Council (MCC) is planning to carry out works on Cowper St between Harris St and Lyons St in April 2024, at the same time as the West Gate Tunnel Project works. We’ve worked closely with the council to help coordinate both works to help minimise disruption to the community.
- Redeveloping Cowper St will create shared open green spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy, as well as improving safety and accessibility for all road users.
WGTP works on Hyde St are due to commence in late 2024, including asphalting and line marking.
