23 May 2024

Construction of the  elevated walking and cycling path along Harris Street and over Whitehall Street continues to progress.

There will be changes to traffic flow in the area before the permanent change of closing Harris Street between Hyde Street and Cowper Street is implemented.

When we’ll be working

We’ll be working from May-December 2024.

Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm. Various night shifts to be scheduled between 8pm to 5am for bridge segment deliveries.

What we’ll be doing

Construction of the Harris Street walking and cycling path is continuing.

The current traffic arrangements will remain in place until the next stage of works begin in early June. The next stage of works will include deck work, painting, and the lifting and installing balustrading and drainage.

What to expect

  • Whitehall Street northbound between Somerville Road and Harris Street will be closed overnight for one night in early-June. Please see the detour.
  • Harris Street will become a single one-way lane and vehicles can travel westbound between Whitehall Street and Cowper Street.
  • No left or right turns from Cowper Street onto Harris Street.
  • Left turns into Cowper Street from Harris Street will remain.
  • West Gate Tunnel Project works on Hyde Street are due to start in late-2024, including asphalting and line marking.

We expect that the delivering and installing the Whitehall Street overpass bridge will take place in August.

We want locals to keep enjoying Yarraville Gardens, Kindred Studios and Kindred Café so we have established detours to help you find your way.

Please see the map for how to get to local traders during these works.

Other works in the area

Maribyrnong City Council (MCC) is continuing works on Cowper Street between Harris Street and Lyons Street throughout 2024, at the same time as the West Gate Tunnel Project works. We’ve worked closely with council to minimise disruption to the community. We appreciate your patience and cooperation while the works are being delivered.

The Cowper Street Capital Improvement Project aims to improve community safety and accessibility by transforming the street into a functional and appealing thoroughfare.

Key features of the plan include a new road surface, improved drainage, pedestrian footpaths and footbridge, greenery and landscaping, as well as lighting to enhance safety during the night-time.
