What we'll be doing
Crews will do kerbing works and asphalting at the intersection of Harris and Cowper Streets until mid-December 2024. Download the Information Leaflet for more information.
What to expect from this stage of works
- Closing Harris Street before the intersection of Cowper Street to vehicles.
- The eastern end of Harris Street will remain open to two-way local traffic only, allowing access to local businesses.
- Pedestrian access along Harris Street and Cowper Street will be maintained.
Maribyrnong City Council wil continue their reconstruction work of Cowper Street, with the southern end of Cowper Street currently closed.
Construction of the elevated walking and cycling path along Harris Street and over Whitehall Street continues.
When we’ll be working
We’ll continue to work from 2 July - December 2024.
Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm. Various night shifts to be scheduled between 8pm to 5am.
What we’ll be doing
Construction of the Harris Street walking and cycling path is progressing well.
The current traffic arrangements will remain in place until the next stage of works begins on 2 July 2024.
These works include pavement upgrades, continued construction of the walking and cycling path, raised island construction and bike lane upgrades on Hyde Street.
We will keep the community informed of these changes throughout the next stage of works.
There will be changes to the traffic flow and parking availability throughout the works which are required to complete construction.
We want locals to keep enjoying Yarraville Gardens, Kindred Studios and Kindred Café so we have established detours to help you find your way.

Other works in the area
Maribyrnong City Council (MCC) is continuing with drainage upgrades works as part of the reconstruction of Cowper Street, working in stages from Lyons Street heading south towards Harris Street.
The Cowper Street reconstruciton works include new road surface, improved rainage, pedestrian footpaths and a footbridge, greenery and landcaping, as well as improved lighting for enhanced safety.

Harris Street works: The final traffic arrangement will be implemented for Harris Street which involves a permanent closure between Hyde and Cowper streets. Drivers will be able to travel one way from Whitehall Street to Harris Street toward Hyde Street to Cowper Street. Hyde Street works: The extended site occupation on to Hyde Street (Yarraville Gardens side) will include a closure of the footpath, parking lane and cycling lane, between Somerville Road and Youell Street. During the Hyde Street works, vehicles travelling northbound will not be able to make a right To set up the site area on Hyde Street, Hyde Street southbound between Princess Street and Somerville Road will be closed nightly on Tuesday 2 July & Wednesday 3 July 2024, from& 8pm–5am. | From 2 July - late August 2024 |
Various disruptions to the way you travel on Whitehall Street Overnight closures of Whitehall Street in both directions will be required at various times to facilitate the delivery and installation of the large steel walking and cycling bridge over Whitehall Street. The Cowper Street and Harris Street intersection will be closed from September during the combined West Gate Tunnel Project pavement upgrades and Maribyrnong City Council works. Harris Street will be pedestrian access only during this time.
