When we’ll be working

Overnight intersection works from Tuesday 14 October to Thursday 16 October

Followed by works to take place over two consecutive weekends:

  • From 8pm Friday 17 October to 5am Monday 20 October 2025
  • From 8pm Friday 24 October to 5am Monday 27 October 2025

What we’ll be doing

As the West Gate Tunnel Project nears completion, we’ll soon upgrade the traffic signals at the Hyde Street and Somerville Road intersection to include cycling and pedestrian movements.

Before intersection signalling upgrades begin, overnight lane closures will be required for service investigations from Tuesday 14 October to Thursday 16 October, between 8pm and 5am.

Following this work, the intersection will be closed over two consecutive weekends, from 8pm Friday to 5am Monday.

Crews will work throughout this time to:

  • Cut and excavate sections of the road surface
  • Remove the old traffic signal system beneath the road
  • Install the new upgraded traffic system
  • Asphalting intersection and along Hyde Street shared walking and cycling path.

We appreciate your patience while we carry out these important upgrades.

What to expect

Noise during works

  • You may notice increased noise from concrete cutting, breaking, vehicle movements, and other construction activities.
  • Where possible, noisy works will be scheduled outside typical sleep hours.
  • Residents likely to be impacted will be contacted before works begin.

Intersection Closure – Hyde Street & Somerville Road

  • The intersection will be closed continuously from:
    • 8pm Friday 17 October to 5am Monday 20 October
    • 8pm Friday 24 October to 5am Monday 27 October
  • During the second weekend of works, the closure of Hyde Street will be extended from Berry Street to Princess Street to complete asphalting along the new Hyde Street and Somerville Road shared walking and cycling path.
  • Local access to Hyde Street/Nicholson Street properties and the Ampol Service Station (corner of Somerville Road and Hyde Street) will remain open via the eastern entrance on Somerville Road (left turn into the station). Traffic controllers will be on-site to assist.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists can travel through the intersections using normal routes. On various occasions, detours will be in place.
  • A number of bus stops on Bus Route 409 near the intersection will be closed during the works.

Detours and disruptions are shown overleaf and on Victoria’s Big Build website.
