When we’ll be working

Ongoing work, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at our citybound tunnel entrance site near Williamstown Road throughout 2025.

We’ll also continue working 24/7 along the West Gate Freeway and in surrounding areas across Altona North, Brooklyn, Spotswood and Yarraville.

What we’ll be doing

As we near project completion in late 2025, we’ll be continuing works at the citybound tunnel entrance near Williamstown Road, along the West Gate Freeway, and in surrounding areas across Altona North, Brooklyn, Spotswood and Yarraville.

Some of these works will require ramp, lane and carriageway closures along the West Gate Freeway to ensure they are completed safely. If any of these works are expected to be particularly disruptive, we will be in touch before they begin.

Tunnel entrance near Williamstown Road

We will be working on completing the connection of the existing West Gate Freeway to the new citybound entrance.

Continued construction activities include the installation of railing and panels for the shared cycling and pedestrian bridge, asphalting and concrete pours for the new Hyde Street ramp finishing works, and the completion of the lane connection between the tunnel entrance and the Williamstown Road off-ramp.

Additionally, works will continue to complete the architectural features on the tunnel entrance, with the team now installing the lighting and electrical components to the structure.
To complete the covering of the tunnel entrance, we will be installing the aluminium façade cladding on to steel framing.

Precast panel installation

To complete the connection between the new tunnel entrance, we will be installing the precast concrete architectural panels near the Williamstown Road citybound exit ramp. The team will also be completing works on the flood gate during this time, an important safety feature to prevent excess water from entering the tunnel.
After completion of the precast panel installation, we will complete landscaping between the West Gate Freeway and the tunnel entrance.

Local works

Works on electrical boxes, electronic signage, messaging boards, traffic signals, light poles and other minor construction activities will occur in local streets and  roads along the West Gate Freeway noise walls in Spotswood, Brooklyn, Altona North and Yarraville.

During these works, local residents may notice workers and minor construction activity

We’ll also be undertaking maintenance and landscaping across the area.

Freeway lane use management system and commissioning works

We’ll continue testing on all freeway overhead lane control signage along the West Gate Freeway, Princes Freeway and M80 southbound. As the devices are major traffic control devices, these have to be tested under full freeway closures. Additionally, as we near completion of the project, our crews will be working to switch on new electronic devices such as cameras, overhead speed limit signage, messaging boards and lighting.

Local ongoing monitoring

You may see our team carrying out water sampling as part of our regular monitoring requirements to confirm that groundwater movement is as expected.

As construction nears completion, our team is preparing to demobilise and remove the equipment when it is no longer required. These works may include traffic changes for drivers on local roads and occasional nightworks.
