As we prepare to open the West Gate Tunnel, you may notice testing activities taking place around the tunnel portals in the coming weeks.
These tests are an essential part of ensuring the tunnel operates safely and as designed.
This includes:
- Signage and lighting
- Speakers and communication systems
- Water and smoke management systems
These activities are carefully planned and supervised by safety and environmental specialists, with emergency services involved in training and response exercises.
During these tests, you might notice:
- Increased lighting and noise near the tunnel portals
- Emergency vehicles on site
- Simulated smoke exiting tunnel structures
The smoke used in smoke management testing is non-toxic and specially designed for these exercises. It helps verify that ventilation and fire response systems work correctly under emergency conditions.
Testing is a critical step before opening the tunnel to traffic. It ensures all systems meet safety standards and that emergency services are prepared in the event of an emergency.
If you have any questions about upcoming testing activities, please contact the project team via one of the methods below. Thank you for your understanding and support as we prepare to open the West Gate Tunnel later this year.
