When we’ll be working
We’ll continue working 24/7 at the West Gate Freeway tunnel exit site near Millers Road, South Kingsville.
We’ll also continue working 24/7 along the West Gate Freeway and in surrounding areas across Altona North, Brooklyn, Spotswood and Yarraville.
What we’ll be doing
As we near completion in 2025, we’ll be continuing works along the West Gate Freeway, at the outbound tunnel exit on the West Gate Freeway near Millers Road, South Kingsville, and in the surrounding areas to complete final construction activities. If any of these works are expected to be particularly disruptive, we will be in touch before they begin. West Gate Freeway impacts
There will be changes to the way you travel on the West Gate Freeway at various times as the team continues to install the cladding, which wraps around the vent structure, and to complete the removal of the 50-metre tower crane located near the West Gate Freeway and Millers Road.
To complete these works, one outbound lane on the West Gate Freeway between Williamstown Road and Millers Road and the Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp will be closed from:
- 10pm Friday 4 April to 5am Monday 7 April
To safely set up and pack down the required site area for the tower crane removal, a full outbound overnight closure of the West Gate Freeway between Williamtown Road and Millers Road is required during the following times:
- 11.59pm Friday 11 April to 7am Saturday 12 April
- 10.30pm Sunday 13 April to 5am Monday 14 April
Additional lane closures on the West Gate Freeway between Muir Street and Kyle Road, and the Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp during:
- Weekend of Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 April
More information will be available at bigbuild.vic.gov.au/disruptions closer to the time.

Southern outbound tunnel surface works
Construction activities continue at this site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These activities include continuing installation of the timber net structure lighting and cladding, completing the connections to existing roads, surface works, and continued construction and fit out of the tunnel power substation.
These works are vital and the final steps for the completion of the southern tunnel exit. These works will also put the finishing touches on the exit to allow for opening of the tunnel at the end of this year.
Freeway works and tunnel entrance and exits works
As part of the remaining works to connect the existing freeway to the new citybound entrance and outbound exit of the West Gate Tunnel, the team will continue to complete the architectural features on the tunnel entrances/exits, the construction of the tunnel roof, the new Hyde Street ramp, the Williamstown outbound exit ramp works, line marking, bridge works and other construction activities.
These works will require ramp, lane and carriageway closures along the West Gate Freeway to ensure the works are completed safely. Freeway lane use management system and commissioning works.
We will also continue to test our overhead lane control signage along the West Gate Freeway, Princes Freeway and M80 southbound throughout 2025. Full freeway closures are required to safely test these major traffic control devices..
Additionally, as we near completion of the project, our crews will be working to switch on new electronic devices such as cameras, overhead speed limit signage, messaging boards and lighting.
Landscaping
In mid to late 2025 our team will begin landscaping works around the outbound tunnel exit site in the West Gate Freeway. Works will include removal of our temporary site set up, located north of New Street, and complete landscaping works.
The team are planning for the installation of a new playground that will be located north of Watson Street, replacing the site sheds which will be removed.
Ongoing Monitoring
You may see our team carrying out water sampling as part of our regular groundwater monitoring requirements to confirm that groundwater movement is as expected. This is common for tunnel construction areas. You may also see the groundwater monitoring team around local streets and parks installing further monitoring equipment and eventually demobilising the existing monitoring systems.
These works may include traffic changes for local roads and occasional nightworks, with minimal noise impacts to surrounding residents and businesses.
We’ll be in touch if any of this work is going to be particularly disruptive.
