The West Gate Tunnel Project is continuing major construction activities on Hyde Street in Spotswood.
Works on Simcock Avenue and Hyde Street/Douglas Parade will be ongoing from July 2023 to September 2023.
Works include:
- Rebuilding the existing intersection at Hyde Street/Douglas Parade and Simcock Avenue
- Installing traffic signals at this intersection
- Installing drainage
- Construction of the new Hyde Street outbound entry ramp.
We will also continue less impactful works to install freeway technology systems, and upgrade the roads and intersection.
Construction activities will take place 24/7 and require road and lane closures. Traffic impact details will be confirmed in the West Gate Tunnel Project’s weekly traffic email alert.
When driving through these areas, please follow traffic signage and check traffic media reports.

Hyde Street/Douglas Parade construction works
Ongoing
In May, we removed temporary traffic signals and reopened Douglas Parade to two-way traffic. Major construction works on Hyde Street will be completed by end of July 2023
From early July until September, we’ll shift traffic on Hyde Street to the opposite side of the road to continue these works. Traffic will continue to flow in both directions.
When walking and cycling path works are undertaken minor diversions will be in place.
Simcock Avenue/Douglas Parade
Reopening late July 2023
Over the last few months, we’ve built new traffic islands, new pavement and started to install permanent traffic signals at the intersection.
This upgraded intersection is expected to be open to traffic by late July with the new traffic signals activated upon the completion of the intersection upgrade.
The upgraded intersection will allow safer and better access to Simcock Avenue, particularly for vehicles accessing the future outbound ramp between Simcock Avenue and the freeway.
Simcock Avenue closure between Booker Street and Hall Street
End-July – September 2023
There will be a 24/7 closure of Simcock Avenue between Booker Street and Hall Street.
The closure is part of the Hyde Street ramp construction. While we install drainage, complete pavement works, line markings, kerb works and lighting.
Local businesses in the area will be notified of the closure and we will work with businesses directly impacted to ensure minimal disruptions to access.
