Upcoming overnight closures

As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project there will be multiple overnight closures of the West Gate Freeway and Princes Freeway.

When we’ll be working

We’ll be working from September 2023 through to mid-2024.

What we’ll be doing

These overnight closures will be done periodically on smaller sections across the West Gate and Princes freeways within the boundaries of the West Gate Bridge, Boundary Road on the M80 Ring Road, and Kororoit Creek Road on the Princes Freeway.

Various detour routes will be in place during this timeframe. Signage will be in place and detour maps can be found on the Big Build website. Alternatively, these can also be found in the weekly traffic email alert.

Works will include:

  • Installing overhead gantries for future freeway management systems such as signs, tolls, speed, and height
  • Concrete pouring
  • Drainage
  • Lighting installation and removals

We will also continue low impact works such as traffic signage installation, noise wall works, anti-graffiti coating of surfaces and other works.

So that work can be completed as quickly and safely as possible and with minimal impact to road users, most of these activities will take place overnight and require road, ramp, and lane closures.

Residents in these areas may experience noise disruptions but this should only be minor as these works will be completed within noise walls.

Where noise may exceed standard levels near residential areas, we will be in touch with residents directly.

From the end of 2023, the project will begin the final asphalt surface works on the freeways. These works will continue through to 2025. This will be communicated closer to the works commencing.

Please note, dates and times for this work may be subject to approvals, permits, site conditions and weather.

What to expect

Night-time works

  • Gantry installation for traffic signage and freeway management systems
  • Remaining noise wall panel installation
  • Freeway management system installation works
  • Other finishing works

The above work will be completed by excavators, cranes, delivery trucks and other smaller vehicles.

Noise

You may notice construction noise, including intermittent noise at night.

Depending on type of works and if works are expected to create extra noise, the West Gate Tunnel Project
team will be in contact with residents directly.

Lighting

Lights will be angled away from homes wherever possible.

Freeway overnight closures

There will be freeway overnight closures of the West Gate Freeway and Princes Freeway in both directions.

Change of lane arrangements can be expected during this timeframe.

Depending on detour routes delays will vary during the night.

When driving through these areas, please follow traffic signage and check traffic media reports.

Ramp closures

We will continue with overnight ramp closures on West Gate Freeway including Williamstown Road, Millers Road, and Grieve Parade.

We will also continue with overnight ramp closures of the M80 interchange.

Additional overnight traffic impacts to be advised via weekly traffic email and bigbuild.vic.gov.au/disruptions.
