As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, overhead gantries are being installed along the West Gate Freeway. The gantries will form part of a state-of-the-art freeway management system for smooth and safe journeys once West Gate Tunnel opens.
From August 2023 through to mid-2024, there are due to be ongoing overnight closures of sections of the West Gate Freeway and the Princes Freeway in one or both directions to safely install the gantries.
Closing the freeway is needed to ensure the safety of everyone in the area while we’re at work and enables our crews to deliver work in a condensed period of time when there’s generally less traffic the road.
West Gate Freeway closure in August
An upcoming installation of an overhead gantry on the West Gate Freeway will require two overnight
closures between Millers and Williamstown roads:
- On Tuesday 8 August, the freeway’s outbound carriageway is due to be closed overnight from 10:30pm to 5am.
- On Wednesday 9 August, the freeway’s citybound carriageway is due to be closed overnight from 10pm to 5am.

When driving through these areas, please follow traffic signage and check traffic media reports.

NoiseIf works are expected to create noise in surrounding areas, the West Gate Tunnel Project team will be in contact with residents directly.
